At the Printing Press, we are committed to reducing our environmental footprint and we are striving for a greener tomorrow. We support WESSA (Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa), a national, membership-based environmental conservation NGO that works to ensure environmental sustainability for current and future South African generations through responsive conservation action, innovative environmental educational and human capacity development that empowers people to make sustainable lifestyle and environmental management choices.
WESSA’s core mission is to promote public participation in caring for the Earth and works with communities and individuals, as well as with local, provincial and national government and partner organisations to address hands-on the issues our planet is facing such as global climate change; the destruction of natural resources (particularly through inappropriate development); the need for sustainable energy; polluted and degraded water systems; waste management; the protection of endangered flora and fauna species; and biodiversity impacts.
Through over 85 years of pro-active engagement with the challenges and opportunities presented by South Africa’s unique natural heritage and the social and economic systems that depend on it, WESSA has made an enormous contribution to conservation and environmental legislation and compliance, being a motivating force behind many of South Africa’s most significant environmental decisions. Some highlights achieved by the organisation include:
- In 1926 WESSA played a critical role in the proclamation of the Kruger National Park
- WESSA was a founding member of the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature) in 1948
- Through WESSA, South Africa became the first country outside Europe (in 2001) to run the Blue Flag Beach Programme which works to improve the management of wetlands and coastal resources
- The Eco-Schools programme was launched in South Africa in 2003 and is implemented through WESSA in over 1,000 participating schools across the country
- The Mondi Wetlands programme has moved vastly improved the management of wetlands in South Africa and beyond
- WESSA has over 50 affiliated Friends Groups throughout the country. These groups of volunteers actively conserve local habitats and ecosystems
- In 2011 WESSA was recognised as an Institute of Sectoral or Occupational Excellence by the Local Government SETA (Skills Education Training Authority) and a range of environmental capacity building courses designed for local government have been developed and are being rolled out across South Africa.
WESSA’s vision is to achieve a South Africa which is wisely managed by all to ensure long term environmental sustainability. To learn more about WESSA visitwww.wessa.org.za
